Communication & Language
At John T. Rice Infant and Nursery School, language and communication development lie at the heart of everything we do. It is our belief that language is the key to lifelong learning and the ability for all children to achieve their full potential. We believe that if children can communicate effectively, they can access all areas of the curriculum, asking pertinent questions and furthering their understanding. It is also central to their well-being as it allows them to communicate their feelings and build positive relationships.
Here at JTR, language development threads through every aspect of curriculum planning with staff ensuring it has a high priority in all subjects. Children are exposed to a wide range of vocabulary linked to every subject they are taught and are actively encouraged to use these words when learning independently. In EYFS, children's CAL is also supported and developed through high-quality adult interactions. Throughout school, children are taught to work with talk partners and in groups using our Talk Guidelines. Oracy is planned into all subjects and sentence stems are used to scaffold children's discussions. There are also lots of opportunities for children to work collaboratively on a range of subjects.
